BRICS Adopts Indore Declaration to Boost Global Agriculture Ties

The BRICS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting in Indore concluded with the adoption of the 'Indore Declaration,' marking a pivotal step in global agricultural cooperation. The declaration focuses on food security, farmer welfare, climate-resilient farming, and digital agriculture. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the collective commitment of BRICS nations to address global agricultural challenges.

The meeting saw participation from nearly 100 delegates, including 60 foreign representatives, underscoring the importance of BRICS nations, which account for nearly half of the world's population and 42% of global foodgrain production. India, under its BRICS presidency, hosted the event, emphasizing its leadership in sustainable agriculture.

Four major initiatives were announced: a BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agro-Ecology, a BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture, a Global Forum on Farmers' Rights in Seed Systems, and BRICS AgriN for agricultural inputs and genetic resources. These platforms aim to enhance research, innovation, and cooperation among member nations.

The declaration also prioritizes small and marginal farmers, addressing their access to resources, credit, and markets. The initiatives are expected to strengthen food systems, promote sustainable practices, and ensure farmers' welfare globally.

The Indore Declaration symbolizes a unified effort by BRICS nations to tackle agricultural challenges and create a sustainable future. With India at the helm, the focus remains on implementing these initiatives for tangible benefits to farmers and rural communities.
