Why BCCI is planning early IPL start from 2027? Devajit Saikia reveals the reasons

BCCI Considers Early IPL Start from 2027 to Address Weather Concerns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring a major scheduling shift for the Indian Premier League (IPL), with plans to commence the tournament earlier starting from the 2027 season. The proposed timeline aims to mitigate the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions during the latter stages of the tournament. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that discussions are underway to adjust the IPL window to approximately March 10 to May 15, moving it up from the traditional late March to late May schedule.

This adjustment is being planned to coincide with the 20th edition of the IPL in 2027, a landmark season for the league. Saikia highlighted that the latter part of the IPL has increasingly been affected by soaring temperatures and the onset of pre-monsoon rains in several parts of India. "This year, IPL started around March 29th (28th), and it was over by May 31," he said.

Saikia elaborated that weather conditions during the final stages of the tournament, particularly after May 15, have raised concerns. "There is apprehension of having rainfall or pre-monsoon season starting. On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds," he explained. To address these issues, the board is considering advancing the tournament by approximately two weeks.

The BCCI is actively discussing this potential shift with the IPL Governing Council. "From next year, we will make an effort, and I have already instructed our General Manager (Games Development), Abbey Kuruvilla, to look for the windows whether we can start it by 10th of March and conclude it by 15th of May," Saikia stated. This adjustment is aimed at ensuring favorable weather conditions, particularly during the playoffs and finals of the 2027 season.

Concerns over playing conditions have been raised by both players and fans, prompting the BCCI to prioritize a more player- and crowd-friendly schedule. "Not all players are very well equipped or well acclimatised to play in such hot conditions," Saikia noted, adding that the board's primary goal is to conclude the tournament by May 15 to provide a more pleasant atmosphere for the event.

Despite these scheduling changes, the BCCI has no plans to expand the tournament's match count beyond its current 74-game format. Saikia clarified that logistical challenges, including the availability of international players and the constraints of the global cricket calendar, make such an expansion unfeasible. "It will be very difficult to go beyond two months because other countries also have to play bilateral matches... So at this moment, there is no discussion regarding increasing matches from 74 to 94. Not happening immediately," he said.

The proposed changes aim to enhance the overall experience of the IPL while maintaining its existing structure, ensuring that players, fans, and stakeholders can enjoy the tournament under more favorable conditions. [S1-S8]
