Kolkata Police, along with central forces, raided the Kalighat residence of Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Mamata Banerjee, at 3 AM on Friday.
The operation lasted approximately four hours, with police officials searching the premises while central force personnel stood guard outside the gate. Allegations were made that the police broke the lock to enter the house and searched every room.
The raid is reportedly connected to a case registered at Salboni Police Station in West Medinipur district, although details about the case and whether Abhishek Banerjee is an accused remain unclear.
The police have not disclosed further information regarding the case or the reasons for the raid. Abhishek Banerjee is currently under investigation by the CID in connection with a fake signature controversy.
This controversy involves allegations of forged signatures on a letter sent to the West Bengal Assembly Secretariat regarding the selection of the Leader of Opposition. The CID is investigating claims that some signatures were either fake or used without consent.
Abhishek Banerjee's signature was reportedly on the covering letter sent to the Secretariat, raising questions about its authenticity.
The Calcutta High Court recently granted Abhishek Banerjee relief from any action in the fake signature case for three weeks, while directing him to cooperate with the investigation. CID has summoned him multiple times for questioning, and he appeared before them on June 11.
