JD(U) Expels Anant Singh, Seeks Speaker’s Decision on His MLA Status

Anant Singh’s political situation has triggered a fresh controversy in Bihar following action by the Janata Dal (United), or JD(U), against him. Singh is the MLA from Mokama, and developments linked to him have become a subject of discussion in Bihar politics.

According to reports, after his expulsion from the JD(U), news emerged about action to vacate the government residence allotted to his wife, Neelam Devi. The report about the residence has come amid questions over Singh’s status as a legislator.

The JD(U) has reportedly sought action from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in connection with Singh’s assembly membership. The issue of his legislatorship is now being considered separately from the action taken by the party.

The party’s action, the rules of the Legislative Assembly and the provisions related to the allotment of government residences are separate legal and administrative matters.

Therefore, expulsion from a political party cannot, by itself, be treated as the automatic termination of membership of the Legislative Assembly.

The final position on Singh’s assembly membership will depend on the relevant constitutional process and the decision of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
