Indian Railways has approved a ₹201 crore project to install the Kavach safety system across 811 route kilometers in the Ambala Division of Northern Railway.
This initiative aims to enhance safety on key routes in Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, including Ambala Cantonment-Ludhiana and Kalka-Chandigarh sections.
The Kavach system, an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology, is designed to prevent accidents by automatically applying brakes, controlling train speed, and avoiding collisions.
It also helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), a critical safety concern in rail operations. The project will cover important rail corridors such as Sirhind-Daulatpur Chowk, Rajpura-Bathinda-Shri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana-Dhuri-Jakhal.
These routes are vital for passenger and freight movement, connecting major regions in northern India. This initiative is part of Indian Railways' broader efforts to expand Kavach across high-density and strategically important routes.
The system uses LTE-based communication to ensure reliable and efficient operations.
By implementing Kavach, Indian Railways aims to significantly improve operational safety, reduce risks, and enhance the reliability of its network, especially on routes handling substantial traffic volumes.
