India, under its BRICS Presidency, delivered the 'Indore Declaration' on June 13, 2026, marking a new global charter for agricultural cooperation.
The declaration, adopted unanimously at the BRICS Agriculture Ministers' meeting in Indore, focuses on food security, climate-resilient farming, and farmer welfare, with special emphasis on small farmers, women, and youth.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that BRICS nations, representing nearly half the global population and 42% of agricultural land, have committed to addressing shared challenges in agriculture.
The declaration outlines four priorities: food security, agricultural trade, sustainable farming, and innovation in food systems.
Four institutional initiatives were announced, including the BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agro-Ecology and Regenerative Agriculture and the BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture.
India’s Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research, Modipuram, will play a key role in natural farming research under this network.
Chouhan emphasized that the declaration is farmer-centric, aiming to translate commitments into actionable benefits for farmers and rural communities. He also noted India’s leadership in promoting natural and organic farming practices, which BRICS nations have now embraced.
