Ian Machado Garry Issues Bold Warning to Islam Makhachev Ahead of UFC 330 Title Clash Ian Machado Garry is set to face the biggest challenge of his MMA career as he takes on Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 330.
Scheduled for August 15, the highly anticipated bout will take place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, marking a historic moment for Garry as the first Irish fighter since Conor McGregor to compete for a UFC title. The UFC officially announced the matchup on Wednesday.
Garry, 28, earned his shot at the title after climbing to the top of the welterweight rankings with impressive victories over high-profile opponents.
Known for his rapid rise in the sport, Garry has established himself as one of the UFC’s brightest prospects since joining the promotion in 2021. After winning the Cage Warriors welterweight title, he transitioned to the UFC and has won 10 of his 11 fights.
His sole defeat came against undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024, where Garry became the first fighter to take Rakhmonov the full distance.
Since that setback, Garry has rebounded with key wins over Carlos Prates and former UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. These victories, combined with injuries sidelining other contenders like Rakhmonov, helped Garry secure his championship opportunity.
Standing in his way is Islam Makhachev, one of the most dominant fighters in mixed martial arts today. The Russian champion boasts an extraordinary professional record of 28 wins and just one loss, with his last defeat dating back to 2015.
