Bengaluru Water Crisis 2026: Tanker Mafia Crackdown, Cauvery Phase-5 Deadline Extended

Bengaluru Water Crisis Deepens as Authorities Extend Cauvery Phase-5 Deadline Bengaluru is grappling with severe water shortages this summer as delays in infrastructure projects and illegal water supply operations exacerbate the crisis.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced an extension of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Phase-5 deadline to August, further postponing hopes of relief for the city’s residents.

The Cauvery Phase-5 project, aimed at addressing Bengaluru’s growing water demand, was originally slated for earlier completion. The delay has intensified dependence on private water tankers, a significant portion of which operate illegally and charge exorbitant rates.

In response, local authorities have initiated a crackdown on the so-called “tanker mafia” exploiting the crisis. Bengaluru police are reportedly targeting unlicensed operators and price gouging practices, aiming to regulate the unorganised water supply.

However, residents in several areas continue to face high costs and inconsistent access to water. The city’s water scarcity has been a recurring issue during the summer months, driven by rapid urbanisation and limited water resources.

With the Cauvery Phase-5 project delayed, experts anticipate continued challenges in meeting Bengaluru’s water needs. Authorities are urging residents to conserve water as they work to address both short-term shortages and long-term solutions for sustainable supply.
