BCCI Considering Early Start for IPL 2027 to Address Weather Concerns The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring the possibility of starting the 2027 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier than usual.
The proposed adjustment aims to mitigate challenges posed by extreme heat and pre-monsoon rains during the tournament's later stages.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has revealed that the board is deliberating over scheduling IPL 2027 from March 10 to May 15, instead of the traditional timeline that begins in late March and concludes at the end of May.
Saikia emphasized that this change would not affect the number of matches, which will remain at 74, as expanding to 94 games is currently unfeasible due to international cricket commitments.
Saikia explained that the decision is being considered to protect the interests of both players and spectators. He noted that the intense heat in May, particularly in northern and western India, has led to complaints from players and fans alike.
Additionally, pre-monsoon rains during the latter half of May have disrupted matches in previous seasons. Starting the tournament earlier would help avoid these issues. The secretary also highlighted logistical constraints that prevent an increase in the number of matches.
He stated that extending the tournament duration beyond two months is challenging due to international cricket schedules, which include bilateral series involving players from countries like Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and the West Indies.
