25 Minutes to 10: How a Reverse Lane is Easing Traffic at Mumbai’s BKC Connector Junction

To address the persistent traffic congestion near the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) connector during morning rush hours, the Mumbai traffic police have introduced a reverse lane system. This initiative aims to streamline the movement of vehicles heading towards South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs, which often compete for space on this busy stretch.

The reverse lane system, managed by the Chunabhatti traffic division, has been in effect since June 5. It focuses on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), a critical route connecting Mumbai’s eastern suburbs to South Mumbai. During peak hours, a high volume of vehicles travels from areas like Thane and other suburbs towards South Mumbai, while many others head towards Nehru Nagar and BKC via the BKC connector. This heavy traffic flow has been a daily source of bottlenecks.

According to an official, the reverse lane operates on the southbound side of the Nehru Nagar-Kurla Bridge when required. It begins near Siddharth Colony in Chembur East, transitions to the northbound carriageway, and extends up to the descent of the BKC Connector Bridge. The lane is operational from Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, between 8 am and 11 am. The decision to open or close the lane is based on real-time traffic conditions or any obstructions.

This system effectively separates vehicles traveling to BKC and the eastern suburbs from those heading to South Mumbai, providing dedicated paths for each group. Commuters have already noticed the benefits, with travel times across this previously congested section reduced from 20-25 minutes to just 10 minutes.
