Andhra Loyola College Hosts Workshop on Digital Accessibility for Visually Impaired

In a significant step towards empowering individuals with low vision, Andhra Loyola College (ALC), Vijayawada, organised a day-long workshop on digital accessibility in collaboration with EnAble India, Bengaluru. The event, hosted by the college's Higher Education for Persons With Special Needs (HEPSN) wing, provided hands-on training to 20 participants, including government employees, corporate professionals, job seekers, and students.

Practical Training on Assistive Technologies

The workshop, led by EnAble India Senior Executive Rajesh and trainers Keerthan Kumar, Bhuvaneswari, and Nagababu, focused on equipping participants with practical skills to navigate digital platforms. Attendees were trained in using Android and Windows accessibility features such as screen magnification, font enlargement, high-contrast display, dark mode, screen readers, and cursor enhancement. These tools are designed to improve access to education, employment, and daily life for individuals with low vision.

Empowering Participants for Work and Education

The impact of the workshop was evident in the testimonials of participants. Mohamad Abbas, a B.Tech graduate preparing for competitive exams, shared that the training boosted his confidence in using accessibility tools, which he believes will enhance his performance in exams and at work. Rama Satyanarayana, an employee at the Bhimavaram Collectorate, highlighted how the practical sessions introduced him to features that could improve efficiency and reduce eye strain during official tasks.

Similarly, G.V. Lakshmi Priya, a senior accountant in the Department of Telecommunications, noted that the training enabled her to customise digital devices for greater comfort and productivity in her office work. Yerra Naidu from the Agriculture Department in Srikakulam expressed that the workshop demonstrated how assistive technologies could help individuals with low vision work more independently and confidently.

A Step Towards Inclusion

Participants lauded the practical approach of the programme, expressing optimism that their newly acquired skills would enhance their academic, professional, and personal lives. The workshop underscored the importance of digital accessibility in fostering inclusion and independence for persons with low vision.
